Blog Resources – How to make a button

When I stared my first WP blog Cabin Chronicles I hired someone to design the theme for me.

I was too intimidated to attempt it myself and the free themes I found tended to be wonky – things wouldn’t show up, or the text in the comment box would be invisible, or some other goofy thing. Shannon from Eight Crazy Design did an awesome job.

I planned to have her do this one too…but unfortunately she is in such demand that she’s booked solid for MONTHS.

And I’m not patient….not even a little.

Luckily, this time around I found a free theme I really liked and everything seemed to work. I think it’s because I got it directly from Wordpress instead of some random website, but I’m not sure. I would love to tweak the colors a bit and make the purple a little more intense, but mostly I’m happy with it.

When I decided to take the plunge and host my own blog party I knew I was going to have to figure out how to make my own buttons to promote the party itself and the projects I feature from the party.

And I’m not a techy person…not even a little.

To make the button, I found this:

Musings of  a Housewife

To make a scroll box, I found this site:

Jenieshell’s Design Challenge

To make the code unreadable so that people can grab your button, I went HERE on the same site. She even provided this handy LINK for a site that will change the code automatically.

Both of these blogs are great resources if you’re trying to figure out how to do things yourself – it’s well worth taking some time to look through them.

One note: the directions for the button assume that you already have some Photoshop skills – which I do not possess. I can do basic photo editing, but when it comes to layering different design elements and making it look nice, I’m lost. Luckily, Bob is great at it and he sat down and helped me get the design part of it right. So – if you don’t know how to do this part you need to find an online tutorial or buy a few cocktails for a handy Photoshopping friend to help you out.

But if I can do this, anyone can…don’t be afraid to give it a try!
